The problem

A returns hall taking 40,000 items a week, where every tote had to be walked from the unload dock to the grading benches before anyone could look at it.

The walking was the job. Graders spent more of the shift moving totes than assessing what was in them, and the queue at the benches grew all afternoon.

Lifted totes picked per hour by 38% and stopped paying people to walk.

What Ridge does

Eight units run the tote loop between the dock and the grading benches, picking totes off the unload line and delivering them to whichever bench is free.

Leeds is also where new tasks are taught. A floor lead demonstrates a pick three times, signs it off, and the model goes to every other site the same shift.

In their words

“We stopped paying people to walk. They grade now, which is the part that needs a person.”
